Views on how technology has changed: What does it say for the Classroom.

Throughout the weeks being in this class gave me an understanding/insight of what and how technology has changed dramatically. This makes me think of when I was a young kid like my daughters age, I would listen to my music on my Walkman, cassette tape or from my mp3 player. Now we have all that on a phone or can upload from an app that can be used within the classroom virtually. When I found a VHS player and mentioned it to my girls, right away she asked “what is that and what was it for”. I remember before Facebook was created there was Bebo and msn (laughing). Now today, kids are so into different kinds of technology and games make us think of what can we do as future educators to how we would include technology within the classroom respectfully and safely as well as teach students about the proper way to use technology especially in the classroom. I didn’t own my first phone till my girl was about 3 or 4 and now as soon as I get up I’m checking my phone. Personally, I am not one for social media other than having a Facebook but being in this class has opened my eyes to what is really out there and how to go about teaching and including technology in the classroom.

I was confused when our instructor used the concept participatory culture when we were in class, this got me thinking about technology of how often we as adults use our phone and other technology everyday from when we wake up to when we go to bed. A few months ago when the internet went out, I’m not sure the reason was but anyways that was insane as I kept asking my sister if she had connection and i would constantly check my phone or refresh to see if it went back on. if that happened when i was younger, it wouldn’t have even made a dent as playing out with my friends is what was on my mind.

What's the Story with Social Media Today? - Ron Foth Advertising

Wesch’s video mentions how different our world is today from back then of how social media’s are so different that they are accessible by a click of a button. Technology and the internet is constantly evolving and this can be said about in his YouTube video. He highlights how people are connected to technology by the many links that helps them connect to others which is so different from back when we only had landlines to communicate. People and kids are exposed to new medias everyday. For the classroom, on the topic of how to make education safer with technology in the classroom and the use of it, we as teachers have a responsibility to educate and teach our students on the proper way to use technology and have open conversations so they have an understanding of how to be safe especially when it comes to social media because some medias can affect how they see themselves and the world around them. Media is changing and we as educators it is important to have a better understanding of what our students are exposed to such like TikTok, Snapchat, Roblox, and other medias so adapting is a good way with our ever changing world. thinking about our students, technology can benefit the classroom and future schools as it can be used as a resource or a means of helping our students communicate but with the benefits we must remember technology can be dangerous as well so educating our students is important. Personally, I think finding the balance is key to go about using technology in the classroom.

FilmMaker – Trying it out

For my learning project I decided to try out the FilmMaker app which at first I was hesitant to use as I am not that good at technology but I found it really fun. I found it very tricky and a bit frustrating for me to use and figure out. Using my learning project and taking snapshots of how to use the app was okay until I had to showcase the steps. I just want to mention that I may use it for my learning process however, that depends on if it works out for my interest of this course. Originally I was going to go with iMovie but I decided to go with FilmMaker. I chose this app because watching a short video on YouTube and found it fairly easy to add videos, edit pictures and so I decided to get it which it is free but if you want the full package deal with all the kinks then you can pay but for me since it is just using the basics to document my progress then i am staying with the free version.

The App has 7 menus; basic editing, intro & animated text, stunning effects, speed & filter, picture in picture, green screen, and music & sound options. For this blog post i am only going to show the first menu just as an demonstration but i am going to add a video of my overall experience with the app which may not be great however, i am still learning

Here are some of the menus

This app has some awesome styles, video effects, video transitions slow motion & reverse and many more.

First we are going to take a look at the basic editing menu. When you open it up you will see three options that this menu has options to trim your video /photo, zoom your timeline for precise editing, and adjust video/photo sequence.

This option gives you ideas on how to trim your videos and photos so that you have an idea of how to edit your clip and by that you would drag the arrow left or right to easily trim the length you want to showcase your video.

For this option you can zoom the timeline for a better editing where you would pinch with you two fingers to zoom in and zoom out in the timeline icon so that you can edit more precisely as to how long you want you video or photo to show before transitioning onto the next.

In this last option for basic editing icon, this option you can adjust you video or photo sequence, the idea is to press your picture and hold the clip you want to swap and drag it to swap among pictures so rearrange then in the order you want.

After importing the tutorial pictures I made a little demonstration with FilmMaker and later I imported my media of making my little tutorial of my earrings that I posted in in my blog of Post 3 and clicked on the ones i wanted to use for making a short video. I trimmed, added different transitions to make it a little bit more interesting.

For this post I will add both my short tutorial and my clip of my progress that I did so far in my learning project. I still have a long way to go to learning how to make different shapes, designs and characters for my earring however I am still in the learning phase and soon will get to where I like to make more beautiful Delica brick stitch earrings. After learning the basics and watch clips on how to create amazing videos with FilmMaker, it kind of got easy but I still find it challenging and will continue to use this app so I can get better.

The Classroom: This app can be useful for the classroom with teacher permission and from the principle and teacher guidance, it can enhance literacy skills through digital video production where students can create their presentations. Students routinely interact with complex forms of online and digital media. Increasingly, teachers are being asked to address an ever-broader notion of literacy – one that includes new forms of digital literacy, related to the multimedia technologies students routinely interact with (e.g., blogs, wikis1 and social networking websites, apps). How can teachers integrate digital literacy with the curriculum which underscores the importance of traditional forms of print and oral literacy? Student-created videos are one possibility that affords an opportunity to integrate print, oral, and digital literacies
into a compelling curriculum unit.

In summary: Incorporating student-created video production into the curriculum and classroom not only broadens the notion of what constitutes “literacy” and “texts” in the classroom but also serves to reinforce traditional forms of literacy through the creation of storyboards, scripts, and other print works and through apps such like this one (FilmMaker). Furthermore, the opportunity to create their own videos may generate genuine enthusiasm for learning on the part of students. Students retained a high degree of ownership, not only of the video production process, but also of the personally meaningful stories the students can create through video.

My Teaching Philosophy

My Journey to Education

My journey began while working in the education system I got to work along side some amazing teachers and I experienced what a teacher goes throughout their day with planning and developing new plans. This made me think of all the incredible teachers I looked up to as role models who encouraged me to continue my education. As a substitute teacher and Educational Assistant, I loved working with the children which made me pursue a career as a future teacher.

My Beliefs and Values

As an indigenous person my core values and beliefs are to incorporate multiculturalism and diversity into the classroom by including cultures, ways of knowing and languages into the curriculum. The school should be a place whereby incorporating these values will help encourage students to express their identities and be aware of the many cultures around them and that learning is key to help them be successful in life. As a teacher I will acknowledge and respect the different worldviews and values within my classroom. Having a welcoming environment for all students and families can have a positive outcome with the community. Students who feel confident to express their voices are more successful in the classroom which I aim to achieve. As teachers and future educators, we will see challenges on how to meet the expectations of our students which I aim to help them succeed in their academic paths by building a classroom which nurtures those strengths. I expect that all students will succeed differently as every child has different learning skills and learns in their own way. I will acknowledge the protocols of the classroom as well as the curriculum that better the needs of my students which I also feel it is important to acknowledge language and culture.

Educational Beliefs

I believe as teachers we need to teach not only the curriculum but also teach virtue, wisdom and to welcome all cultures into the classroom that builds student/teacher relationships. I believe having that positive relationship with the student helps them feel more comfortable and safer in the classroom. I believe it has to be someone they can trust and confide in as a result they will be more likely to participate actively in the class, build that connection, and challenge themselves academically. I also believe that my students deserve an equal opportunity to learn. I aim to instill positive principles into students with essential motivation to learn in all subjects.

I believe that education needs to teach students more than just information but to be positive in their life experiences and I think that inclusive education should be a priority. Whereby providing resources in the classroom can challenge cultural and social norms. Also, I think that by incorporating an environmental education inside and outside the classroom children can learn from their natural environment which can work towards a holistic education.

Conclusion

I hope to instill in my students respect and to follow their dreams and by having “open-mindedness” being allowed to be openly in my classroom can help to support and show the morality of a society. I do not believe that children should be restricted in thought but the be creative and to be supported by their teachers. While I do not think there is a correct way to know how to best teach a student, I believe that children are our future and by working together we can help students achieve their full potential in school and in life.

Post #3 – Making creative brick stitch earrings

So last week was my first attempt to making my first pair of Delica brick stitch earrings with my sister on the phone as our Messenger couldn’t work due to poor connection in my home community so we just stayed with talking on the phone. The beginning of my process of my learning project, I started taking notes when my sister was guiding me through the first part of the earrings which I found very easy until it go to the second layer. Just like to mention that we started about 7:36 pm and an hour into the process of her guiding me through the steps of the first layer and I’ve been busting my thread and we had to start all over. But I have learned from my mistake and was able to catch up and follow along and continue.

My notes that I gathered from my sister on a few things that I need to do and work on as well as to gather more supplies in order for the beads to stay in place and that will make it easier with my beading.
First Attempt gone wrong but when it comes to making a mistake, we learn from them.

So after catching up to where we left off my sister guided me through many steps until I got really confused in a step she tried explaining so I had to ask her to send a picture through messenger so that I can see and after that it as a breeze with all the other steps. We finally managed to finish one side of a earring and this was about 10:30 at night. After talking to my sister she mentioned that she was going to go ice fishing with the family and she told me to try out the other side by myself and if I am stuck just to follow her instructions. At the very end of my video and this post shows a finished piece of one side of my earring Delica brick stitch earring that I did with my sister.

Finished product of one side of a Delica brick stitch with the help and guidance of my sister. This one side is a size of a ten cent which my sister suggested to start small just to get the basics of how to start off and then once I get the hang of doing earrings I can go bigger.

Learning Project Post #2 – Creative Beaded Earrings

This week for my Learning project I decided to learn how to make Delica beaded earrings with the help of YouTube and my sister however, she is at home in my hometown of Paulatuk so we are using Messenger, phone calls, and facetime to help with my creation. I wanted to make note that my sister is really good at making Delica beaded earrings. Once I know the basics of beginning my creation then I can take it from there but along the way there might be time I will call her to show where I went wrong. This may be a little different and might be confusing for me but I do like a challenge. This is something that I’ve always wanted to do as I in the past have purchased some beautiful hand made earrings from local people from my community and personally I don’t mind buying and owning handmade creations I just thought that I should try and learn something interesting and new. I have created different projects in the past but had a hard time finishing them and I think that this learning project for this class will help me to keep on track. Just recently I have gathered my supplies for my learning project and I am excited to learn something new and fun!!

Reflection on Twitter and Blogging

At the beginning of this course I was nervous as I didn’t know anything about blogging or how to create a blog for this course because I am new to all this information and learning about what blogging is, I found it very interesting. At first i was hesitant to start a new thing but now that ia m in the course i am starting to learn new things about my blog. For my first blog post about my introductory I had to play around with a few things on my dashboard to get the hang of what to post and where to post it. The more I use this site for my course and for my tasks such as my learning project that I am to blog about the more I am feeling more confident in this course.

For my reflection for this week I have been learning more and more about my blog and for my Twitter, to be honest I am not new to twitter as I have been using the site/app for about two years now when my instructor in my first year in the YNTEP program mentioned and suggested it for one of my courses we had to create an account in twitter and use it for our course which I found very interesting and beneficial for me as I have found it a great tool for the most part. I haven’t used it that regularly but until now that I am in this course I am finding it as a great resource to connect to my fellow classmates and to find helpful ways to learn about new educational resources.

RSS – Using Feedly!

So sometime early last week I joined and subscribed to Feedly, which is an RSS reader that helps you sort and find articles on topics such as Education, News, Entertainment, information on the articles and so much more. So far I have found this resource a very helpful tool and as well interesting as Feedly found articles that I am interested in. Some of the resources I came across were related to Education, educational technology, lessons planning, important information on teaching strategies related to my my course.

The two resources that I found so far that i found interesting is:

  1. Educational Technology

Educational Technology is a learning resource that has educational web tools and mobile apps for teachers and educators as well as a helpful tool that has digital media, educational resources such as a guide, applications, can be a distant learning tool, books for teachers that are designed for learning via handheld, portable devices such as through tablets, smartphones and feature phones. Students may uses this resource to engage in mobile learning as an independent learner or can use the apps as part as a distant learning however must abide and respect the proper licensing protocols.

2. Teach Thought

Teach Thought is a great resource that is dedicated to innovation in K-12 education and is handy for teacher and educators. This tool is a growing teaching through thought leadership, profeesional development, resources, and helpful for the creating educators in curriculum development. The websites goal is to innovate education through the growth of innovative teachers and is dedicated to the thought and development of learning models and frameworks to help teachers as well create transparency for new possibilities in teaching and learning.

Personally, I found that Feeldy, is a great way to find information within education and other media that has articles that supports my interest within this course. I am excited to use Feedly through this course, on my twitter as well as to share with my fellow classmates.

After working I decided to continue my education where it led me to the Yukon Native Teacher Education Program here in Whitehorse in which I am currently in my second year in the program. My experiences with educational technology is that since I worked within the school I was able to learn and use some of the main technology within the classroom such as the smart board, teams, and Moodle. for this course I can personally say that I am new to blogging which i haven’t owned a blog before. I can say that I am excited to learn more about my blog and all that goes with it.
